15″ x 17″ yellow cedar, stained. The inside measurement is cut out for an 9″ x 11″ insert.

This piece was part of a solo exhibition at the Sheldon Jackson Museum, “Filling Empty Spaces: Attraction and Distraction” In this show, I use my artwork to represent the numerous and erroneous ways we fill an emptiness within. For each piece, I name what we pursue, followed by what it is we really seek.

Titled “Wealth: Seeking Security,” the carving represents the front of a bentwood cedar chest. Cedar chests were used to store many things of value: clan objects, food, ceremonial garb, and so on. The concept is the empty interior, meaning an empty cedar chest.
